Restoring a Family Heirloom, Sensitively

By Anne Edwards

Antique and inherited pieces come with more than wear — they carry memory. Restoring them well means knowing when to intervene and when to leave history intact.

Assessment first

Before any work begins, I examine the piece closely: the metal, the stones, the construction and the era. This tells me what's original and what's safe to restore.

Preserving character

Not every mark should be polished away. Sometimes the patina is the point. I always discuss the approach with you before starting.

If you have a piece that deserves care, bring it in — I'll treat it as if it were my own.
